1. Sylphia (PC Engine) - lunatic obscurity
Oct 11, 2024 · In this 1993 greek mythology-themed shooting game, you're suffenly fighting huge monsters to the sound of some Jock Jams dance track.
With this being a vertical shooter by Compile, you might be tempted to think that it's just a fantasy-skinned Aleste game (Though to be hon...

You know I gotta say, I play way too many shmups on this system. You think as someone who tries to review a lot of games on this console so more people might be more aware of the library that it would be nice but I sure have done a poor job, almost half of the games on my ranking lists are shmups! So you might be wondering why another one? Well the cover kept intriguing me, no there's no other reason.
Well when I started playing I knew immediately what I was getting into. I immediately went "Compile worked on this didn't they" well it's kind of weird because they technically did as some of the same people worked on this but Compile is oddly never listed anyone in the actual game or box. Also that name, Sylphia. I'm quite confused by it. According to the Hardcore Gaming 101 page for this game, it says the protagonists name is Silphia but other sites including this one say Sylphia like the title. Who's being wrong here I'm confused... (me from the future to say I'm blind. I literally purposefully looked at the game over screen twice and didn't even notice the game says "Silphia has no life!" How the hell did I not notice that...)
Well here we have what you expect from a Compile shmup especially from this console. Now I will say I had some hope of liking this one since I really enjoy Spriggan which is basically just an Aleste game without the name. I feel indifferent towards this one. It's got a lot of stuff that feels familiar but it's got some is...

Sylphia (シルフィア) is a shoot 'em up game developed by Compile and published by Tonkin House for the Turbo CD in 1993. Despite being developed by Compile, the company is never credited anywhere in the game, though their key staff are mentioned in the credits sequence. While not connected to the Aleste series, Sylphia retains most of Aleste's gameplay elements, while changing the setting to a fantasy/mythological one. A long time ago, when human beings and gods lived together... The king of the deep
